Protest by Tamils in Ottawa continued into third day, blocking major Ottawa street. Police officers were rerouting traffic to ease the jam. Wellington Street in both directions between Elgin and O'Connor Streets were closed due to the Tamil rally.
The protesters demand the Canadian government to intervene and stop genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The emotions are high even on the third day, said the Tamil National reporter in Ottawa. Most of the protestors had some harrowing story to tell about the relatives back home. They were worried about the bleak future of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. They want Canada to pressure Sri Lanka for ceasefire, place economic sanctions on Sri Lanka and to recognize rights of Tamils for self-determination. They were determined to continue the protest until Canadian government takes some action.
Police Officers are trying to keep the crowd under control, and to avoid the protest moving to other streets. So far, there have been no reports of confrontation.
