Over 400 Australian Tamils Attend Candle Light Vigil

E-mail Print PDF

Over 400 Australian Tamils held a candle light vigil at Martin Place, Sydney from 7.30PM – 9.00PM tonight to mourn the loss of over 2000 Tamil civilians, who had been killed in the last 24 hours due to Sri Lankan Military offensives in the North of the island of Sri Lanka.

The candle light vigil follows several grass-roots initiatives organised by the Australian Tamil community. Attendees stated this event had been organised in less than 2 hours. Through SMS’s and emails, details of the event had only started circulating at 5.30PM, said several participants.

Sources from the conflict zone have informed the Tamil Diaspora that the Sri Lankan Military had used cluster bombs and heavy artillery in its attempt to enter the ‘no-fire safe zone’ where over 300,000 Tamil civilians are currently taking refuge. The only medical facility – a makeshift hospital – had also been bombed.
