The humanitarian aid of food and medicine sent by the Tamil Diaspora through the Captain Ali vessel almost five months ago, finally set off to Vauniya yesterday evening.
The 884 tons of aid sent by the Tamil Diaspora was delayed reaching the much needed war displaced Tamils in the internment camps due to the government imposed red tape and unwarranted delays.
According to Daily Mirror Online the goods were cleared off from the port by the relevant authorities and the convey of 27 containers filled with the goods were flagged off by the Disaster Relief Service Minister M. S. Amir Ali.
Mr. Surein Peiris, Deputy Director General of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) told Daily Mirror Online the cargo might have been delayed another few days as the Ministry of Defense needed a clearance from the Commissioner General of Essential Services, which the SLRCS did not posses, the matter was later resolved by evening after acquiring the relevant documents and the containers were given the green light to proceed Mr. Peiris added.
The goods although delayed had no major issues and all except some medicine were to be taken to Vauniya. The SLRC had set up the facilities in Vauniya to unload the aid as soon as it reaches Vauniya, so steps can be taken to distribute the aid among the IDPs.
