The Central Government of India will take a decision today (June 24) on the ship MV Captain Ali that is on a mercy mission to Sri Lanka.
A high level delegation of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapakse, Basil Rajapakse and Lalith Weeratunge will be meeting External Affairs Minister S M Krishna later today. A decision is expected to be taken after that meeting.
The Sri Lankan delegation before going for meeting with External Affairs minister will meet the Indian delegation led by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh.
It is expected that at today's meeting India will express the need for speedy rehabilittion of the IDPs and insist on a more robust political devolution plan.
MV Captain Ali is a ship that is carrying around 884 tonnes of aid including food, medicine and other relief materials for internally displaced Sri Lankan Tamils donated by Tamil Diaspora.
The ship was turned away by Lankan Navy after which it anchored off the coast of Chennai.
MV Captain Ali set sail on April 20 from Ipswich in Britain to France. It left Fossurmer in France on May 7 to go to Vanni in Sri Lanka. It left Colombo on June 9, after being asked to leave Sri Lankan waters and entered Indian waters and anchored off the coast of Chennai on June 14. Yesterday it moved further away from coast of Chennai and anchored in the international waters.
